Sneak in Some ‘Me’ Time During the Holidays

Don’t let family obligations and your to-do list get in the way of giving yourself a break this holi...

If your holiday calendar looks anything like mine, it’s full of my kids’ school events and various parties. And then there are tiny notes reminding myself about putting up decorations and wrapping presents. Phew! With so much going on over the holidays, it’s important to take time out to give yourself a break! Looking for ways to sneak in some “me” time with a busy holiday schedule? Here are some ideas to help you recharge.

1. Take “shopping” breaks. When you head to the mall, bring a book or magazine with you. After you’re done picking out gifts, find a place to sit and read for 10 minutes or so. Not really into reading? Find the nearest coffee place, and kick back with a hot drink Or while you watch harried shoppers pass by.

2. Play Secret Santa. Helping someone out has the added benefit of giving you a mood boost. Leave a plate of cookies, a bottle of scented lotion, or some other small gift anonymously for a friend. You’ll both have a better day (but it’ll be your little secret).

3. Try a new-to-you fitness class. Re-energize your body -- literally -- by trying a new work out. If you’re not currently a member of a gym, consider getting a day pass to your community recreation center, or pick out a workout DVD at the library (many have short segments so you can fit in a few crunches even if you only have 15 minutes). Find a workout that appeals to you, whether it’s fast-paced Zumba or a relaxing yoga session.

4. Schedule your own play date. Invite a buddy or two to do something together. You could keep it simple and have lunch. Or figure out something different to do like going bowling, taking a hike sponsored by an area park, or have a girls’ night in watching movies.

5. Call a friend you haven’t talked to in awhile. Sure, you might be able to follow your friends’ lives through Facebook, but why not pick up the phone and chat? It’ll give you a chance to really catch up with each other. Plus, you’ll be able to take a break from your day.

Do you have a tip to share about fitting in a little “me” time over the holidays? How do you find time for yourself?
